We've stopped the count. In the last few months, Seiko has come up with so many limited editions in the Seiko 5 Sports line that it might soon be a separate line... Some of them are more successful, some of them are litlle less successful. The new Seiko 5 GUCCIMAZE belongs to one of the best ones, so let's take a look at it.
In collaboration with the famous Japanese artist, two limited editions of Seiko 5 Sports Guccimaze were created. The first one, blue-black version SBSA135 is limited to 1500 pieces and will also get to our market. The second one, all-silver, called SBSA131J will only consists of 300 pieces and is intended for selected stores only.
To tell the truth, I don't even mind that since the blue-black version is definitelly better. Guccimaze has included the typical slightly poisonous green color for the second hand and indices, making it look modern, remarkable and sporty.
GUCCIMAZE, also known as Yuta Kawaguchi, was born in Tokyo in 1989. After finishing his degree in design and media communication, he worked for a design agency, but in 2018 he switched to freelance work.
To be honest, I have never heard the name Guccimaze or Yuta Kawaguchi before. He is more famous in artistic circles and of course in his homeland. But his limited edition works really well for me and he definitely offered something else. But design always depends on an individual taste, so I believe that for many it might be too much. It is also a limited edition, which means an increase in price compared to the regular collection even though the parameters of the watch stay the same.
The watch has a mineral glass, Hardlex to be exact, the diameter of the case remained 42.5 mm and the water resistance 100 meters. Apart from the fact that it is a limited edition and quite possibly a collector's piece, it is still a good old Fives. But I don't believe that the design and originality of the piece will interest some so much that they will be happy to get it.
GUCCIMAZE is famous for his specific graphic style - three-dimensional typographic forms that express a feeling of tangible sharpness, set in vivid, poisonous color schemes. GUCCIMAZE collaborated on visuals for Budwaiser, Adidas, RedBull, Jägermeister or on graphics for the album of the famous rapper Nicki Minaj. You can see his work on his Instagram or website.
The signature design of this Japanese artist can be seen on the entire watch. For example, on the bezel there is a graphic created by disintegrating and assembling the letters Seiko. The same motif is then on the dial. It was, obviously, designed by Guccimaze directly for Seiko.
On the clasp of the watch we find the number 5 in the graphic style of Guccimaze. The strap itself is a classic steel oyster bracelet with a folding clasp and a lock.
The caseback has a Seiko 5 S inscription (after the Seiko 5 Sports line) in the artist's typography. The caseback is see-throught and inside of the case is the automatic 4R36 movement, which can be found it the entire Seiko 5 Sports collection. It is not decorated in any way, but it is a reliable caliber that runs at a frequency of 3Hz and offers about 40 hours of power reserve. We can also find the limited edition number on the caseback.
The last Guccimaze reference is on the box that is also special for this edition. The package also includes a sticker, probably for real Guccimaz fans.
Due to the limited number of 1,500 pieces for the whole world, only few pieces will get to the Czech Republic, so I recommend to those interested not to delay with a pre-order. We expect it in July 2021.
